Teraloop is advancing energy storage with an innovative configuration of existing technologies: MAGLEV, flywheels and brushless electric motors.

Its system consists of a large-scale magnetically levitated rotor that is charged and accelerated when surplus energy is available, then discharges into the grid when the energy is needed. The technology would be an effective solution to medium- to large-scale storage applications while also reducing problems of grid congestion and volatility from high levels of variable renewable sources in the energy mix. Teraloop’s technology is scalable to a large-scale storage system, to operate beyond the power and energy range of typical battery technologies. The company’s first laboratory-scale device was developed in 2016. In 2018 it delivered the world’s largest scalable flywheel.
